7. A Rocky Companion

From Olbrück Castle, Laachus walks to Weibern and the Tuffstone Center. Even in the town center, he finds many impressive examples of stone masonry. “I’m in the right place,” thinks Laachus, “anyone who builds such amazing stone buildings knows everything about them.” Laachus can’t get enough of the houses with their light-colored walls. His gaze wanders up the walls, causing him to overlook a stone on the path and stumble. “Ouch, ouch, ouch…” Laachus whimpers as he falls. “Oh dear,” he hears a concerned voice say. “I’m sorry, I was just resting here for a moment. Are you all right?” Laachus replies, “Yes, I’m fine. Who are you?” – “I’m Tuffany.” Laachus is quite taken with the charming figure. “My name is Laachus, and I’m on my way to the Tuff Stone Center because I want to find out why I can swim,” he explains. “You can swim? How wonderful! May I accompany you?” – “Of course!” Laachus is delighted to have such a friendly companion.

During their visit to the Tuffstein Center, Tuffany tells him where she comes from: “Volcanic eruptions 400,000 years ago left behind deposits of ash and embers. This material solidified into tuffstone, which is used today for beautiful stone carvings. Some of my brothers and sisters are even sitting in the Great Vault of Cologne Cathedral today.” “That’s amazing!” Laachus exclaims. “If I could swim,” says Tuffany, “I’d spend the whole day swimming in a beautiful forest lake.” Laachus, who’s really enjoying himself by Tuffany’s side, asks, “Which is the nearest forest lake from here?” – “The Riedener Waldsee,” Tuffany enthuses, “I’ve always wanted to go there.” And since Laachus would much rather go swimming with Tuffany than figure out why he can swim, he sets off with his new companion toward the Riedener Waldsee.
