This varied and challenging gravel/e-bike loop tour connects the Rhine Valley and the Vulkaneifel, taking in the impressive Maria Laach Abbey and numerous natural highlights.
This varied loop tour includes both paved paths and extensive stretches on gravel and forest trails. It starts at the Bad Breisig Tourist Information Office and connects the Rhine Valley with the unique volcanic landscape of the Eastern Eifel and the powerful atmosphere of Maria Laach Abbey. Passing through the “edible” town of Andernach, the route leads to the Lava Dome in Mendig, where you can experience the region’s volcanic history in an impressive way. From here, the route continues to the picturesque Maria Laach Abbey—the cultural highlight of the tour. The route continues past the Olbrück Castle ruins, offering sweeping views of the Eifel, before heading back to the Rhine. Highly recommended for leisure cyclists: Those who wish to avoid the longer climbs up into the Eifel hills can take the Vulkan-Express from Brohl to Engeln. The ride on this historic narrow-gauge railway offers an additional experience, combining idyllic scenery with the romance of rail travel.

To make your way up to the Eifel Highlands, take the Vulkan-Express from Brohl to Engeln, and round out the day with a relaxing visit to the Roman Baths in Bad Breisig.
A visit to the Maria Laach Abbey, as well as the Vulkankeller and the Lavadome in Mendig, make for great stops along this tour. Along the way, there are plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat, such as in Burgbrohl (Schloss-Schenke), at the monastery restaurant near Maria Laach Abbey, or at the brewery and beer garden of the Vulkanbrauerei in Mendig. There are also plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat in Andernach and, to wrap up the tour, along the Rhine promenade in Bad Breisig—many of which are right on the banks of the Rhine along the Rhine Cycle Route.
