According to legend, a young fisherman lives deep at the bottom of Lake Laach. On clear moonlit nights, you can see him sitting at a magnificently set table in a brightly lit castle deep beneath the water, surrounded by enchantingly adorned elves and fairies. “He must know!” flashes through Laachus’s mind. “He lives at the bottom of the lake and knows my stone friends. He surely knows how I, too, can reach them." So he runs quickly to the boat rental at Lake Laach, rents a pedal boat, and heads out to the middle of the 3.3-square-kilometer lake. Until it gets dark, Laachus takes a nap in the rocking little boat—after all, he has an exciting journey ahead of him. No sooner do the stars begin to twinkle than Laachus looks over the side of the boat. There, sure enough, he sees the fisherman’s boy. “Hey, can you explain to me why I, as a stone, can’t dive?” Laachus calls out, leaning far over the side of the boat. “No idea,” says the boy, who doesn’t want to be disturbed during his feast with fairies and elves. “I don’t know why I live here deep in the lake and can’t get back to the surface to my parents either.” Now it’s clear to Laachus that the boy can’t help him. A tear rolls down his stony cheek and creates small ripples on the smooth surface of the water. The fisherman’s son feels them too. Now Laachus’s fate touches him after all: “The monastery!” Laachus exclaims. “Of course! Why didn’t I think of that myself? There are very wise and friendly people there—I’ll ask them why I can swim.”
