Adventure hike around the Wehrer Kessel Take part in the hike around the Wehrer Kessel and experience fantastic views as far as the Westerwald. But there is also plenty of culture on offer with a visit to the baroque parish church and the baroque parish garden.

On this 15-kilometer adventure hike around the Wehrer Kessel, led by tour guide Konrad Friedgen, you’ll walk nearly the entire circumference of this almost perfectly circular basin. Along the way, the guide shares fascinating insights into the area’s historical and volcanological highlights. Starting from the winery, the tour begins with a visit to the sacred grounds surrounding the parish church of St. Potentinus and the adjacent Baroque parish garden. A tour of the interior of the church, with its exceptionally opulent early Baroque decor, is also available upon request. The route then leads through the Tiefental valley up to the Hoher Osterberg, one of the most beautiful scenic peaks in the Eastern Eifel. Hikers are treated to sweeping views across the Rhine Graben all the way to the Westerwald. Passing the St. Anna Chapel, the trail then heads east toward the Dachsbusch in the eastern part of the Caldera. Here, a remarkable geological outcrop—a glacial slip fold—can be admired. During a break on the Hüttenberg, the view takes in the Wehrer Kessel and the mountain range rising to the west beyond the caldera, consisting of the Meirother Kopf, Tiefenstein, and Osterberg. In the cliff face of the adjacent Wehrer sand quarry, the individual ejecta from the Hüttenberg volcano—which erupted approximately 250,000 years ago—are clearly visible and well-preserved in the rock layers. After crossing the A61, the trail then leads back through the Welschwiesen Nature Reserve to the starting point.
