Führung über das Klostergelände von Maria Laach

Tourist-Info Maria Laach

1:00 PM

The impressive abbey church forms the heart of the Maria Laach monastery complex and is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Romanesque monuments in the country - in the tradition of the great Romanesque cathedrals in Speyer, Mainz and Worms in the Rhineland. The church is decoratively built from brown-yellow Laach tuff, white limestone and red Kylls sandstone.

Later, gray tuff from the Eifel region and basalt lava were also used. Among its distinctive features are the underground crypt and the vestibule, known as “Paradise.”

In addition to the monastery and its guest wing, the grounds are home to the monastery’s various operations. The monastery generates its own revenue through these operations. It is particularly worth noting that it has its own combined heat and power plant, where the abbey also generates a portion of its own energy. Thanks to its own spring, from which Maria Laach draws its water, the monastery is self-sufficient in this regard as well.
