Pfarrkirche Burgbrohl
The Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler Chamber Choir will once again present this year’s program on August 9 at 5:00 p.m., this time at St. John the Baptist Parish Church in Burgbrohl.
On the theme “If It Were Dark,” the program features songs from Franz Schubert’s song cycle *Winterreise*, two quartets by Johannes Brahms, and two songs by Heinrich von Herzogenberg. Two Baroque versions of the sacred antiphon “O sacrum convivium”—by Giovanni Croce (1557–1607) and Andrea Gabrieli (1510?–1586)—have been deliberately interspersed within the sequence of Romantic songs. They are intended as moments of pause, allowing the audience to approach the overarching theme “Wenn es dunkel wär” anew.
The title “Wenn es dunkel wär” describes not a state of being, but a premonition. Especially on a summer evening, when the light lingers long and night is slow to arrive, a special state of limbo arises: between light and darkness, between the outside world and inner experience, between consciousness and the subconscious. The image of the sunset has always fascinated poets and composers alike. But what actually happens during this process of darkness falling—and how does our perception change in the process? The concert is dedicated to this question.
Admission is free. Donations are requested at the end of the concert.
