Nickenich Hochwald - RNi2
Nickenich
Directions:
From the parking lot with the impressive Roman tomb, turn left up the path into the forest. Follow the path until it forks, where you first turn left towards "Eppelsberg" and then right towards "Maria Laach". Ignore the path that goes off to the left and stay on the path that leads slightly uphill. Keep right until you reach a fork in the road. Stay on the gravel path here and turn right towards the refuge. Ignore the path to the right, so that a few hundred meters further on you come to a sparse wooded area and then to the "Aarefeldhütte". Take the right-hand path downhill towards Nickenich and turn right at the next crossroads. The path now winds its way through the forest past several crossroads. Follow it downhill back to the Roman tumulus, passing the fork where you turned off towards "Eppelsberg" on the way there.
Sights along the way:
Roman tomb: The Gallo-Roman burial complex dates back to the 1st century AD. It is evidence that despite the conquest of the Rhine zone by the Romans, the local Celtic population retained their ethnic habits for a long time.
Castle gate: The castle gate dates back to 1677, when the fortifications of the only knight's seat dominated the town of Nickenich.
