Mauerley

Wassenach

Naturally exposed basaltic lava flow.

The Mauerley is remarkable in several ways:

On one hand, it offers the great picture of a naturally exposed lava flow over a length of almost two kilometers.
Long rows of mighty basalt lava columns stand almost uninterrupted on the southern edge of the valley between Burgbrohl and Glees.

Larger sections of the lava flow, which have slipped downwards, form imposing, impassable block fields in the beech-lined valley slope. On the other hand, the block fields in particular offer an ideal habitat for some rare animal and plant species.

The badger lays its structures between the basalt lava blocks.

Evergreen creates a blue sea of flowers in spring.
