Sour wells or sourlings are carbon dioxide-containing sources that are typical for regions with volcanic activity.
This is indicated by the field name "In der Sauerbornswiese".
Even today, the source is simply referred to as “sour water”.
The water from the depths of the volcanic Eifel has been used by the population for centuries and was marketed for decades by the neighboring company Burgquelle (closed since 2015).
From the local history of May 1954: The Sauerbrunnen is flowing again! The carbon dioxide source has been drilled 26 meters deep; it delivers two liters of water per second. In the course of the expansion work, a modern production hall with more than 20 employees was created from the almost 30-year-old well building. The publicly accessible fountain, which is constantly flowing again, has also been renewed.
